How to style your kitchen

Styling a kitchen is about more than just colour and finishes It’s about how the room feels when you wander in half awake to put the kettle on, and how it feels again when you switch the lights off at night. Good styling brings everything together and makes the space feel settled, regardless of the type of home you’re in.

 

The beauty of what's already there

The fixed elements are, well, fixed. You can’t move them, so work with them! Cabinets, worktops, and flooring set the tone, so keep them calm and considered. Neutral cabinet colours give you longevity, while texture adds interest without shouting. Think woodgrains, stones or a soft matt finish.

In older homes, let original features lead where you can. Exposed brick, beams or uneven walls bring natural character. Don’t cover them up! In new builds, styling is your chance to add your own character to the room. If you’re keeping it neutral, add pops of colour or texture.

Balance colour with confidence

Colour works best when it’s purposeful. Two or three tones is enough. A main shade for cabinets, a secondary for walls, islands, or splashbacks, and a grounding tone through worktops or flooring to keep everything feeling anchored.

Darker colours suit larger, well-lit kitchens or base cabinets. Lighter shades help smaller rooms feel more open and work well on wall spaces. If you love bold colour, try it on an island or in a pantry rather than everywhere at once. With a large variety of colour options, glass splashbacks are also the perfect place to add a ‘splash’ of colour and personality.

 

Lighting sets the mood

Lighting is a styling tool as much as a practical one. Layer it up. Ceiling lights for overall brightness, under-cabinet lighting for prep, and softer lighting for evenings. If you have an open plan kitchen space, you don’t want harsh kitchen lighting encroaching into your living room.

Lighting temperatures also make a huge difference to the look and feel of the room. This is often shown as a number with a K for ‘kelvin’ shown after it. Warm White (around 3000K) is more inviting and suitable for a more relaxed feeling. Cool White (around 4000K) is brighter and more suited for practical tasks.

   

Finishing touches that make it yours

These are the small touches that set the mood for the kitchen space and are used daily, so choose a finish that feels right and keep it consistent. Handles can completely change the look of a kitchen. Changing the finish from stainless steel to brass can add warmth straight away. Textiles like a fabric blind soften hard surfaces, while plants and personal pieces add warmth.
