Back in 1946, it started with two friends, a Sussex workshop and plenty of hands-on know-how. That practical mindset still shapes every kitchen today.
Our story starts in 1946, when two friends set up a small manufacturing business in Sussex, making wooden products in the years just after the war.
It was practical, hands-on work, and that mindset still runs through everything we do today.
By the early 1960s, the focus shifted to fitted kitchens, spotting an opportunity as homes and lifestyles began to change.
What started as a simple idea quickly became something bigger: designing kitchens that weren’t just functional but built around how people actually live.
In 1961, the name Manhattan was introduced, inspired by modern living and clean, contemporary design.
From there, the business continued to grow, opening showrooms and refining the way kitchens were designed, made and installed.
Through the 70s, 80s and 90s, the business expanded, opening new showrooms, investing in manufacturing, and earning industry-recognised certifications for both product and installation.
It wasn’t just about growth. It was about getting better at what we do, improving quality, refining processes, and building a reputation customers could trust.
In 2013, Paula Rosa and Manhattan came together to form Paula Rosa Manhattan, combining decades of experience in both retail and large-scale kitchen manufacturing.
That partnership brought together the best of both worlds: design-led thinking and manufacturing expertise, all under one roof.
Since then, the business has continued to evolve, with significant investment in manufacturing, new showrooms, and large-scale projects across the UK.
At the same time, we’ve focused on sustainability, improving how we work and reducing our environmental impact year by year.
Today, we’re still based in Sussex, designing and manufacturing kitchens in the same place we’ve worked for decades.
We’re part of a wider European group with deep industry experience, but our focus remains simple: creating kitchens that feel right for the people who use them.
We’ve been doing this since 1946, and we still approach every kitchen the same way.
By listening. By thinking through the details. By making sure everything works, not just on day one, but every day after.
