Kitchen cabinets buying guide: what to look for and why it matters

A practical guide to choosing kitchen cabinets that hold up to everyday life, from construction and storage to finishes that feel good long after installation.

Published

Kitchen cabinets hold everything from your daily plates to your annual Christmas serving bowls. They take the daily knocks, carry the weight of everything you own, and quietly decide whether your kitchen feels calm or frustrating. Choosing well here makes everything else fall into place.

This is about buying cabinets that work hard for real life, not just look good on day one.

Look past the door and check the cabinet itself

Doors get all the attention, but it’s the cabinet itself that does the hard work. A good cabinet should feel solid and reassuring when you open it, not hollow or flimsy.

You notice it in small moments. A drawer pulled open with one hand while the other’s holding a stack of plates. It doesn’t dip, twist or complain. It just slides back in smoothly. When you stop noticing the cabinet altogether, that’s usually a sign it’s doing its job properly.

Our cabinets are made using 16mm MFC (that stands for Melamine Faced Chipboard), chosen for its strength and everyday durability. It creates an easy clean surface that stands up well to moisture, heat and daily wear. We also take sustainability seriously! MFC uses responsibly sourced timber and makes efficient use of raw materials, helping to reduce waste while still delivering cabinets that stay square, doors that stay aligned and drawers that run smoothly for years to come.

Colour choices that work as hard as you do

Cabinet colour shapes how a kitchen feels once it’s being used properly. A considered palette makes buying easier and helps the kitchen age quietly.

You feel it mid morning. Light moves across the room, fingerprints have appeared, the kitchen’s already been lived in. The colour still feels settled, not fussy, and nothing’s drawing attention to itself.

Platinum White keeps spaces bright and open. Light Grey feels soft and adaptable. Graphite adds depth without shouting. Grey Bardolino Oak brings warmth and texture, giving the look of timber with the consistency of a fitted kitchen.

Storage smarts that make everyday life easier

Good storage is what makes a kitchen easy to live with. Deep drawers outperform cupboards for everyday items like plates and pans. They let you see everything at once and save your back in the process.

You open one drawer and everything’s there. Plates, bowls, lids. No shuffling things around just to reach what you need. It saves seconds every time, which adds up faster than you realise.

Be cautious with narrow cabinets. A 300mm unit might balance a layout visually, but it won’t comfortably hold large dinner plates. Storage that matches what you actually own is what separates a smart buy from a daily irritation.

Get the fundamentals right

There’s no single “best” cabinet. But when the construction is solid, the storage makes sense and the colours feel right for your home, everything else starts to flow.

A few months in, you’re not adjusting doors, questioning storage, or noticing small annoyances. The cabinets have faded into the background and the kitchen just feels easy. That quiet lack of friction is usually the reward for getting the fundamentals right.
